Avebury Neolithic Henge, Wiltshire

Avebury is a small village in Wiltshire England, surrounded by Europe's largest stone circle, a neolithic megalithic monument. The outer circle although not complete is still very impressive indeed being 427 metres in diameter.
There are two smaller stone circles within the main outer circle, the northern most circle having two out of three huge stones known as " the cove " still remaining. A huge high bank is located outside the main circle next to a very wide ditch that would have been around twice as deep when dug originally.
The building of Avebury henge started some time around 2500-3000BC depending on what publications you read.
The St Michael & St Mary's ley lines briefly meet within the henge.

This photo shows part of the huge bank & ditch that ran right round Avebury at one time. The ditch would have been around twice as deep when dug.
This photo shows the stone known as the " Devils chair ", it is one of the largest stones at Avebury. The stone has a natural seat formed near the base, hence the name.
This photo is of a close up of the " Devils chair ", traditionally young ladies would sit on the seat on Beltane (May day) and make a wish.
